"... Yes, it is unusual for us to make arrests in a case without a body, however it's not impossible." The investigation began just after 10:30 p.m. March 6 when Stacey Studemire, Kelly's girlfriend and a third woman told officers they had seen "suspicious" men in their neighborhood in the 6000 block of Langford Street, according to the original information report. The women said Kelly was at first talking with them, then ran from them. Kelly's mother told officers her son "stays in trouble and is always disputing with people on the street," while another woman said he "starts trouble, then hides out." Dingee said Kelly was living with his mother at the time. There may have been "domestic issues" with Kelly, and his mother called Gerod Studemire to "confront him" about it, Dingee said. Officers searched, but no sign of a crime was found and Kelly was never seen again, the report said. Police searched again March 9 when another ex-girlfriend said he hadn't been seen anywhere, then his name and description were placed on a national missing person's database. Then homicide detectives began investigating March 13, Dingee said. "After a detailed investigation we had very strong evidence to believe Jamel Kelly is in fact dead," Dingee said, adding he was probably killed after he was chased down Langford Street, behind some houses and into a wooded area. Police would not say how they think Kelly was killed but believe his body was loaded into the trunk of the silver Lincoln owned by Gerod Studemire and moved, Dingee said. "Some time after that night, the Lincoln Continental was burned and destroyed," Dingee said. The fire department was called out to extinguish it, but Gerod Studemire said an electrical problem caused it and no investigation was made, police said. Dingee would not say where or when the car burned, adding that an image of it shown by the Sheriff's Office was secured from a nearby security camera.
